Always inspect and pre-test. Document and photograph. Note all pre-existing damage.
Test for crocking and bleeding. Inspect for pre-existing color migration.
Inspect for heavy soil and stains.
Look for irregular shape and being out of square. Note if rug lays flat and corners curl up. If shrinkage is possible, quote for tacking out before cleaning.
Cleaning procedures:
Dust rug.
Wet out with cool, Clear water. If the rug fails the crocking test, wet out with AntiDye solution. If it fails the bleeding test, wet out with Dye Release solution.
Pre-spray with Fringe Pretreatment (Sublime) if oily soil is present.
Apply LST solution over entire rug, front and back.
Work in with hand brush, or use shampooer or other tool if the rug can take it. Remember that you are cleaning the sides of the yarns, not the cut pile ends, so it will take more effort to wash these type of rugs.
Rinse with cool, clear water, front and back until rinse water is clear.
Squeegee, roll, wring out, extract, or centrifuge to remove excess water.
If using flatbed washer, run through as normal.
If shrinkage is a concern, tack-out during drying.
Speed dry. If hanging to dry, use spring clamps on both sides to prevent flapping and falling.
If color migration is a concern, add a rinse cycle of Dye Release solution to rinse away color contamination. Then extract excess water and fat dry on cotton towels or quilts. Place on top of two or more layers of cotton material, add two or more layers on top of rug, with airflow (without blowing off the layers of material). Use heat, dehumidification, or other method to speed dry.
